Talk about rhinestones and folks of a certain age may well remember Elvis Presley and his outrageous outfits. However the singer had always been a little outrageous in his gyrations, and for much of his career, even earlier on, his outfits have tended to push the envelope of establishment tastes. Rhinestones, then, were only the latest in flamboyancy for him, though, to be sure, his tastes did progress to ever more extravagant designs.
Given such popular perceptions of him, tied as they are to his choice of dress, even when off the stage, it’s amusing to think about that once upon a time he was more square-cut than not. Rather than rhinestones and the like, the worst that could be said of his appearance was the lock of hair that fell over his forehead, out of place from the slicked back coif he wore at this time.
Then he was drafted into the Army, in 1958. Wisely, he made the decision, at least partly on a former manager’s advice, to serve his tour as a regular soldier instead of receiving preferential treatment by performing musical performances that would have kept him in touch with the public.
Wiser still, producers at RCA, his record label, made sure to keep him within the popular imagination through the ingenuous marketing of previously unreleased material, ten of which turned out to be Top Forty hits, in addition to the recompilation of old favorites across four albums.
All while on active duty with the Army in Germany! Far from harming his career as he’d feared, Elvis became quite the Everyman for serving like anyone else. In contrast to some of his fellow musicians, Elvis was typically considered the most respectable, the most presentable, to mainstream/establishment sensibilities. Parents might still fret at his highly suggestive and deliberate pelvic gyrations, but at least that was all they could object to concerning his public persona.

Various ships of the New York City Staten Island Ferry service offer different kinds of boat seats. Some designs allow you to lay down flat almost as comfortably as on any other hard bench, while other types feature seats with what is supposed to be an ergonomic curvature that makes them unsuitable for laying down on.
Most times of the day, of course, a ferry’s boat seats wouldn’t be available for such a use anyway, seeing how loaded New York rush-hours can be, even for transportation to the so-called “forgotten borough” of Staten Island.
Other times, however, particularly on the weekends, seating is plentiful and many a commuter takes to them as to a bed, almost. You can be positive it’s a commuter, one who habitually travels on the ferry, because visitors are otherwise too busy oohing and ahhing over the sights.
After all, looking at Lady Liberty from the confines of ferry boat seats – none next to the windows face out – is nothing when compared against leaning over the railing at her. And who wants to take pictures with the most popular statue in all of the United States from behind a glass window, anyway?
No, if you have come this far, well over a mile from the harbor of downtown Manhattan Island, you will experience her the way numerous immigrants have, in passing in the open air, you are really heading in the opposite direction, away from the city, in common with countless soldiers spanning two world wars.
Other variations exist, too, between the various ships employed by the Staten Island ferry service. Some offer a second storey observation deck of sorts, while others can hold cars as well. However, since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, vehicles have not been allowed on the ferry.

Yes, a camping tent is essential equipment. But how about a portable grill? Perhaps not as necessary, but for most casual campers, it’s still some thing of a need. After all, what’s a warm camping tent without a warm fire outside, full with the uniquely fragrant aroma of juicy meat being roasted?
Particularly at the end of a hard day’s hike! Although fun in itself, the great outdoors could certainly be improved on with something hot and delicious!
Of course, this being the 21st Century, hot food doesn’t have to mean a real fire. There are now meals ready to eat (MRE) that utilize a chemical reaction in order to heat up food flamelessly! A great deal simpler to pack along with your camping tent than even the most portable of propane grills, to be sure.
Next to shelter, food is the other aspect of camping that probably most discourages individuals who are otherwise inclined to give the activity a try. It sounds really nice, even romantic, to spend the evening outside, by a lake or on a mountaintop, but with out adequate shelter or great food, all the little miseries of a life in the wild become magnified, particularly for our modern sensibilities.
The MRE is the best thing ever developed in that regard, then. Portable grills and cookers are great, too, but nothing beats an MRE for convenience. A selection of flavors are obtainable, even in just the U.S. alone – take a look at those from other countries, reflecting the culinary customs of the locals!
Of course, fresh air really whets an appetite, so just about anything should taste great. But just keep in mind one thing: never take food~ into the tent! It will attract pests like insects and other vermin, not to mention more serious creatures for example bears and the like!

Mention marble sculpture and chances are that and most folks think about such examples as Michelangelo’s David or Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. But there is a lot more to marble artwork than that. Of course, no one denies that Italian marble statues are some of the best examples of the material ever made, but there’s much more to working with the “crystalline rock” (its etymology via the ancient Greeks, masters of the material themselves) than what is commonly imagined.
Modern illustrations abound, in which marble is pushed to the limits. But for some folks, the most majestic examples of marble sculpture are those Mother Nature herself has so lovingly crafted over untold eons of patient chiseling and polishing.
For who has not caught his or her breath on the startling simpleness of stalacites and stalagmites? Arising out of the coolness of the dark, or silently suspended off the cavern ceiling, these unmetamorphosed limestone may indeed be what first inspired humankind to chisel and polish.
Or consider such folded and weathered examples as stud the shorelines of lakes, rivers, and oceans. Why do folks not generally consider such works in contemplations of marble? Nature is certainly full of beauty, had we but eyes to see.
Of course, human masterpieces are maybe infinitely more versatile, whereas even essentially the most astounding of natural wonders can only come about as the result of the same eternal forces which, after several hundred millennia, prove to be of a limited repertoire.
But the point is clear; marble has been worked on by more than just man, and, for that matter, a lot more than Greeks and Romans and Italians! Marble is found not only in statue form, but some of its greatest achievements has been as buildings, such as the incredible Taj Mahal in Agra, India. Next ye think of marble, then, think of everything!

It may seem unusual to modern sensibilities, but there are more than a hundred different categories of ancient Greek vases, a representation of the many different uses for them – as well as occasions on which they were to be used. That’s right, whole categories of vases would be dedicated to not just a particular use, but a specific use on a particular occasion!
Thus, while many ancient Greek vases were utilized to hold oils and perfumes, people back then distinguished between oils held for athletics and oils kept for cosmetics. It is not so far removed from our own sensibilities when it comes down to something like bags; a purse is used to carry money and also other small articles, while books are typically transported in backpacks. Or think about how the upper classes of Britain used to dress in completely different clothing for the day and the evening!
Thus the kaleidoscope of categories, largely distinguished by subtities only a trained eye and mind can note. There does exist, however, various kinds of ancient Greek vases which admit more easily of identification by the layman of a more general education. What interests most modern collectors, however, will be the artwork on such pottery, of which scholars have identified several styles as well.
The first period is the Protogeometric, so-called mainly because it precedes the Geometric, the main difference being that the latter age consists of more sophisticated shapes and, ultimately, human figures and illustrations of scenes from mythology while the former is entirely abstract.
The Orientalizing design is next, inspired by Greek encounters with the Persian east and Egyptian south. This was followed by one of the most iconic style of all in ancient Greek pottery, the Black Figure Period of silhouetted forms with incised details. Eventually, such details would be painted directly on the surface during the Red Figure Period. It all ended, ironically enough, with the gloriously named Hellenistic Period, after which Greek civilization gave way to the Roman.

Talk about Texas and people think about wide open spaces. No one first imagines the tall towers of Austin, its bustling downtown and rather cosmopolitan atmosphere.
As a residential property developer of many years, Isaac Toussie has often contemplated on the differences between urban and rural markets. In this article, we are going to use Isaac Toussie’s first-hand professional experiences to consider the issues. But you should know right at the outset that what follows is just being presented for human interest purposes only and not meant to serve as any kind of professional advice. All readers are urged, strongly, to talk to licensed professionals when making business decisions of any consequence.
Longer lifespans have led to more and more people retiring to the good life in much more rural areas. Such long-time city-dwellers can really make their retirement dollars stretch in these inexpensive locales. Many of the houses are much larger than what could be had for the same price in the city, and they are often built from scratch to specification!
But before you take the plunge, consider that big rewards come from big risks – and big risks mean a high probability of failure. Losing money is never fun, but losing money you have is preferrable to losing that which puts you into debt! So always double check that you could afford, literally, a worst-case scenario before getting involved in high-risk gambles.
For instance, rural areas lack many of the simple day-to-day conveniences most folks take for granted. The store may be several tens of miles away instead of a simple five-minute drive. This is why it’s ordinarily harder to sell a rural home as opposed to an urban one. Which in turn is why you’ll likely need to rely much more heavily on advertising to sell your property, as less people will be driving by and see your for-sale sign. By the same token, it’s also harder to find good investment opportunities, even though they are not uncommon.
Another intriguing and potentially problematic issue unique to rural realty is the fact that because homes are much larger and often built along one-of-a-kind designs, they are more difficult to appraise. Unlike mass-produced housing, typical rural properties like farms, ranches, mountain homes, lake homes, and so forth can often be quite different from one another in their features and characteristics. It will also be much more difficult to find qualified and reliable contractors and laborers in the countryside. Specialized workers will almost certainly come at a much higher price in rural areas simply because there are less experienced craftspersons available to go around.

Modern scholars classify Greek vases by shape, though there are about a hundred various categories that result. As can be imagined, most distinguishing features are extremely subtle and require not only a trained eye but an understanding of art theory. Several others, however, may be readily identified by the layman with only a little bit of self-education.
Among such Greek vases effortlessly recognized by non-scholars are the amphora and the stamnos, both of which are utilized to store as well as transport food and wine. For cooling or mixing wines, however, ancient Greeks mostly used kraters or psykters. When it comes to really drinking wine, however, a kantharos, kylix, or oinochoe was used.
Drawing water was another matter, and so naturally necessitated an entire category of Greek vases, which includes the hydria, loutrophoros, and lebes gamikos. Interestingly, the lebes gamikos was composed of three pieces; a bowl with handles, a covering lid, and a stand to support them all – no surprise the name means, literally, “marriage bowl!” Actually, it was indeed utilized as a component of wedding rituals, to bring water for the bridal bath. Therefore vases of this sort were decorated with wedding scenes, typically involving preparations or the processions themselves.
As can be imagined, a culture that invented vases just for carrying water on a particular occasion is sure to use vases for such things as cosmetics, too! And so it’s that the pyxis and lekythos were used to hold oils and perfumes. They’re not to be confused with those employed for athletics, also containing oils, such as the aryballos and alabastron.
Do you think its strange that the ancient Greeks should employ so many categories of vases when any one should do? Well, simply take a look at our own times, when people have so many different bags for just as many different occasions!

Starting an internet business is the new way to riches in the 21st Century. Having a minimum of start-up costs, nearly anyone with ample drive and know-how can do it. And so indeed, innovative website domains are registered every day in their tens of thousands! It is an exciting time to have The Next Big Idea, because the power of the web means unprecedented scope and depth.
Although while having an internet business is fairly easy, actually making money will be a struggle! It is less of a struggle, however, in most cases, since, even if you were the proverbial guy selling snowballs to eskimos, using the power of the world wide web you can now sell them to, say, the islanders of Tahiti instead. (of course, the logistics involved are probably considerable, even should demand prove profitable!)
So the first thing to comprehend about an online business is that while it makes a lot of things much simpler than before, everything is still difficult to achieve. With millions of sites out there, people will need to be able to find yours. This simply means that search engines must rank you highly – within the top seven results, essentially, above “the fold,” where visitors do not have to scroll down the page because the overwhelming vast majority of people simply do not. Actually, you can be on page one of Google and still hardly make any business if you are not within the top seven!
It is actually even tougher than that – the majority of people don’t bother scanning past the top five, really. Usability test after usability test confirms that individuals will just click the very first few results, typically two or three, before being captivated by something they see. So it’s really important to rank highly!
There’s so much involved in setting up shop on the web. As with any other decision of consequence in life, please make sure to exercise due diligence and do extensive research!

Wine for medicinal purposes? It used to be a hilarious excuse of alcoholics, however scientific study seems to confirm the practice – in moderation. Consuming a single five-ounce serving of red wine a day seems to duplicate the beneficial aspects of caloric restriction without any of the possible unwanted effects for example muscle loss and decrease in bone density.
Nothing has been conclusively proven yet – because long-term studies require, well, a long period of time to complete – but all signs so far have been positive. Not like the case of smoking, which doctors in the 1920s actually recommended for good health (!), the daily drinking of red wine in moderation does indeed appear to provide health benefits.
Note that we’re talking about red wines in particular, not regular, and not barley wines or other kinds of fruit wines. Neither do we mean other kinds of alcohol, regardless of whether made from grains or vegetables – only red wines.
The main reason for this is that resveratrol, the key chemical providing all these benefits (there are others, of course; a little on them later), comes from grape skin and is found most abundantly in red wines. Specifically, resveratrol is made by grape skin when infected by fungus, such as that which takes place during fermentation through the exposure to yeast.
White wines, in contrast, are produced with minimal contact of that sort during their production process and therefore are not the best source of resveratrols; needless to say, all other kinds of alcohol contain no grapes at all, though all alcohol, in moderate, minute amounts, are now presumed to provide some benefits to the heart.
So grab a small glass of “red, red wine” and kick back to the UB40 song of the same name and sip little by little, enjoying your daily dose of resveratrol, polyphenols, antioxidants, and flavonoids!

Absolutely nothing says cooking inside the great outdoor like the portable Coleman Roadtrip grills. Powerful propane grilling that features authentic open-flame drip-through flares. Mmmm!
Grilling is really a form of cooking that uses heat applied directly to your food. It is so popular simply because it tastes great and is fascinating to watch. And there’s nothing as primeval as huddling around a fire in the great outdoor. That’s why camping grills like a Coleman Roadtrip truly complete the experience. Somewhere in our collective unconscious as a species we must be hard-wired to appreciate the sight of flames, the smell of roasted flesh, the taste of juicy meat.
Coleman Roadtrip grills are quick and easy to set up, a lot faster than a traditional campfire. Some thing like the latest LX line offers matchless lighting with push-button ignition. Two fully adjustable and independently controlled burners are available per grill, with a cooking surface of almost three hundred square inches – enough for any hunting party!
There is practically nothing like a nicely seared, carmelized steak or filet right after a beautiful long hike. Nothing like huddling in the dark together over food freshly cooked. A portable camping grill makes all this possible, and Coleman is really a excellent choice for the money.
Okay, this is starting to sound like an advertising copy – but it is not; it is merely the opinions of a true connoisseur of outdoor cooking. Not just backyard cooking, but true outdoors cooking – nowheresville, in-the-middle-of-some-ancient-forest cooking. Sure, it is mostly about the environment; the surroundings are what really lends flavor to the experience. Indeed, the surroundings are the experience.
But a good grill goes a long way to helping every thing along. And designed particularly for portable cooking, a Coleman is highly recommended. Of course, be sure to marinade where possible! Or use the removable surfaces provided to transform your unit into a griddle or stove. Yes, it’s versatile. After all, as any outdoorman (and woman) knows, adaptability is key with Mother Nature!
